Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'EmSome Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em

Series 1, Episode 3:  Love Thy Neighbour

First Aired: 01-03-1973

Written by: Raymond Allen

The third episode of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em is called Love Thy Neighbour and at the beginning Frank and Betty have been enjoying and evening in front of the telly. Frank is very relaxed. In fact, he's asleep and it isn't long after he wakes up that the telly looses its sound, so Frank gives it a slap and it looses the picture as well. To make matters worse they have not had the telly very long, Frank blew the last one up on Tuesday and the Spencers have been blacklisted by three television companies already.

It's getting late and Frank has to go to the Labour Exchange in the morning so Betty suggests that he should go to bed. Before he manages to get up the stairs though, there is a knock at the back door. It's Betty's mother and she has a suitcase with her. She has left her husband because he's brought a pet python home with him from his last trip.

Betty's mum has barely sat down when she has a funny turn and Betty wants Frank to phone for a doctor. But they don't have a phone and Frank has already broken the one in the phone box, so Betty tells Frank that he will have to use a neighbour's phone; a writer, Mr Faraday, has just moved into the street and he's bound to be still at it. Frank looks a little uncomfortable about disturbing

anyone who is 'at it' but he goes across the street anyway and takes a little Spencer chaos along with him. Frank has to go across the street a few times, in fact and, needless to say it is not very long before Faraday is a nervous wreck.

Towards the end of Love Thy Neighbour, there is a scene where Frank has got locked out of the house and, not wanting to wake Betty, he has borrowed Faraday's ladder is trying to climb in through a window. It is not long before he is clinging to the falling ladder and he ends up dangling from the branch of a tree. Due to the heights involved this is probably one of the most dangerous stunts in the series so far and Michael Crawford did not use a stuntman, remember.
