Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'EmSome Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em

Series 1, Episode 4:  Have a Break, Take a Husband

First Aired: 08-03-1973

Written by: Raymond Allen

The fourth episode of Some Mother's do 'Ave 'Em find the Spencers about to Embark on their second honeymoon and they are going by train. Although the episode is entitled Have a Break, Take a Husband Betty very nearly gets a complete break from her husband because the train nearly goes without him. Frank was caught short, he is in the loo, and as the train pulls away she calls out, Fraaannnk!" and Frank rushes to try and board the now moving train. It is quite a hilarious scene as he hangs from carriage doors and tries to climb through windows before finally knocking on the guard's door and begging him to let him in.

The journey takes three hours and Betty is less than impressed with how their second honeymoon has started: travelling in separate carriages. Frank tell her that he is sorry, but that apparently is just what he said on their first honeymoon and that time they were travelling in separate trains because Frank got the platforms mixed up. He ended up in Shrovesbury, while Betty waited for him in Torquay.

Frank and Betty try to cover up the damageMost of the episode concerns Frank and Betty's exploits at the hotel and I am sure that you will not be surprised to hear that Frank has a few problems. The first one is just a little thing: two separate beds. He doesn't want to be a bother and so Frank decides to slide the beds together. And tears the lyno. But that's okay because he can cover the hole with the mat. Which hides another hole in the lino. But that's okay too because he can cut the lino with a knife and then pull it forward to hide the hole that he has made and then cover the other hole with the mat again. Of course, that will leave some bear boards near the wall, but he can move the wardrobe over from the far side of the room and use it to cover them. In theory. It all sounds simple enough to Frank, but it is not long before he has a lot of broken furniture and is falling through holes in the floor.
