Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'EmSome Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em

Series 2, Episode 6:  The Baby Arrives

First Aired: 27-12-1973

Written by: Raymond Allen

An Excited Frank jumps out of the still-moving car and leaves Betty to pull on the handbrake. "She's having it! She's having it!" he says and an orderly and two nurses come rushing out to help Betty into the hospital.

Betty isn't 'having it' at all though. Not yet anyway. It is another false alarm and it's the fifth time in a week. The doctor is not impressed, the hospital is short-staffed anyway and he is sick of his time being wasted.

Frank and Betty share a problem in this episode: they don't know what to call the baby when it arrives. Frank is hoping for a boy and if that is waht they get Betty wanted to call it after its father, but Frank feels that one Frank is the family is enough. They don't want to call the baby after relations either because it could cause jealousy, so Frank thought that they might name the child after a friend. But the Spencers do not have many friends and although the milkman comes in for a chat sometimes, Frank feels it unwise to call the baby after him -- people might start talking -- and so Frank asks Baby SpencerDoctor Smedly about his first name. It turns out to be Horatio. Frank has a giggle at this and enquires about the doctor's middle name. It is Sidney. Frank can only answer: "We'll let you know then."

Betty's contractions start in the middle of the night and Frank has to rush her, yet again, to the hospital. This is it. This time it is for real and the Spencers are having a baby. "Push down, Betty, push down. one last effort. that's it, it's coming. Look! Look, it's got the Spencer nose!"

The Spencers don't have a boy, it is a girl, and Frank and Betty even have a little beret for their daughter. Franks final words: "I'm a success!"
